Ear tubes

We’re finally giving in to the tubes. If I’d known that Kellan was going to have five ear infections in the 6 months following his first ENT appointment back in May 2007, I would have done it then. I’m not concerned much about the surgery itself - it’s outpatient and it’s a 5 minute surgery, so it’ll be over quickly. However, it probably won’t happen until about 9 AM, and he’s not supposed to eat or drink anything other than clear fluids after midnight. He can have clear fluids (including water, apple juice, Pedialytle) up to 2 hours before surgery. I”ve done a little bit of research on that ever trusting internet, and have found that regular milk is considered solid food when it comes to anesthesia. However, breastmilk is considered something in between solid food and clear liquids and that breastmilk can be had up to 4 hours before surgery. And for those of you that visit our website frequently, you know that I’m still breastfeeding my 21 month old son, and will readily nurse him in the middle of the night he happens to ask (and yes, it’s awesome when they can finally ask for it).

What’s really annoying is that this particular hospital says that the child can have breastmilk up to 6 hours before surgery if they’re 11 months or younger. Sounds like a party line to me. What’s the difference between an 11 month and a 12 month old child? And why can’t they follow the accepted range of allowing breastmilk up to 4 hours before surgery? The other thing is that they only allow clear liquids right after surgery. Again, breastmilk is considered a clear liquid, so I ought to be able to nurse him right away. All I know is that when the poor little guy isn’t feeling well, he wants breastmilk A LOT. My only option will be to be not be with him so that he won’t want it.
