The Montessori Discount
If you’ve listened to some of our podcasts or read prior posts, you know that both of our children have been at a Montessori school since they were babies (the first started when he was 1 year and the other at 9 months). You’ve also heard us complain about the cost. One of the things that they encourage at this school is early toileting compared to US standards. They do this by looking for signs of readiness and than switching to underwear usually between the ages of 15 and 20 months. It’s a bit messy, but it works. You can read more about it here. Punkalicious was out of daytime diapers before his 2nd birhtday and Captain Evil is well on his way though not quite there (he’ll be 2 in a few weeks). And that’s what I call the Montessori discount – not having to buy nearly as many diapers.
What we’ve done was start out with the underwear full-time at school (once their teacher told us they were ready) and put them back in diapers when they get home (please don’t tell Ms. Alba). And as they start to catch on at school, we start using underwear more and more at home. Of course, when we’re out and about, or when we just don’t feel like dealing with toileting, we just use diapers. Now if I was at home full-time with the kids, I’m not sure I’d want to deal with all the mess, but if you’re willing more power to you. It works!
