It’s OK - You really don’t have to medicate for a fever
Since he was a baby, Punkalicious has always rejected medicine. Thankfully, he never really was that sick. We’ve been through different tricks to have him take it such as chewables mixed with M&Ms, bribes, and well, just shoving it down his throat and having him immediately throw it up. Note to self - don’t shove medicine down his throat because he’s just going to throw it up. I’ve come to the point of not worrying about it too much and just trying to comfort him with a cool wet washcloth on his temples if he refuses medicine.
So, I saw a thread on the forums at IHMMB about this article and have had my suspicions confirmed. You do not have to medicate for fevers caused by infection! A fever is a good thing - it is fighting the infection. According to the article, the only time a fever can cause brain damage in children is if it is over 107 degrees which is typically caused by heat stroke or hyperthermia. The only exception to the “don’t worry too much about a fever” is in infants that are under 3 months old. Of course if your child is miserable and will take medicine, there is no harm in giving medicine to help them feel better.
So next time your child has a fever, you don’t have to rush to the Tylenol or Motrin. You can medicate as needed, or not. This is just another example of listening to your child!
