Vitual Exercise with Wii
I just read an article about the exercise kids get while playing on the Wii. From an exercise standpoint, it’s a nice substitute to other gaming consoles but is still not a substitue for going outside and running around. Unlike what the marketing would have you believe, this isn’t going to turn your couch potato into a bodybuilder. I’m sure it won’t hurt them at all but it isn’t the same as spending an hour in the gym.
Now I’m not opposed to my 4 (almost 5) year old playing video games (an hour or so a week) or watching TV (a 1/2 hour a day if he wakes up before everyone else does), but I certainly don’t encourage it. A number of his friends have gotten the Wii along with a number of different games (which Tom says is just their Dads using them as an excuse to buy the system). I started to wonder if we should buy it too. Now that our financial situation is starting to improve, I can no longer say, “We can’t afford it.” I have to have better reasons for not wanting to buy a new video game console. And honestly, neither Tom nor Punkalicious have asked about buying it, so it’s not a question I have to answer (which should tell you something since Tom is so in to games). After reading the article, we’ll just go ahead and stick with what we do.

The Wii blows. It’s the next pet rock. Everyone wants one now but in a year or two it’s be collecting dust in the closet.
