Here we go again (the tubes fell out)
The past eight months have been magical for us. Captain Evil hasn’t had one single ear infection. The longest stretch prior to that was between the age of 5 weeks and 6 months. The little guy has been sick this entire week. I took him in to the pediatrician on Monday, and the prognosis was great – it’s just a virus, ride it out, ears look great, the tubes are in, etc. Plus, a daughter of one of the pediatricians is in his class, and she had recently been out with a virus for 5 or 6 days, so I was half expecting the virus to last a while. On the 5th day of this illness, I decided to take him back in, and sure enough the tubes are out, and he’s got another ear infection. I think this is number 11 or 12 – I’ve lost count. Ugggghhhhh!
When I took him in the second time, the pediatrician showed me the difference between an infected ear and an uninfected ear. I couldn’t believe how clear the difference was which has led me to wanting to buy an otoscope. Honestly, I wish I had bought one when all this started almost 2.5 years ago (and yes, that’s Captain Evil’s age which means that he had his first ear infection shortly after he was born – 2 weeks to be exact). If I can convince myself to part with the $50 it will cost to get it here, I’ll go ahead and get one.
I’m sure physicians have all sorts of reasons why lay people like me shouldn’t own otoscopes. I wonder if they felt the same way about thermometers when they first came out.
