The ear/tube saga continues. . .
Last week I reported that Captain Evil’s tubes had fallen out. The doctor who gave me the prescription for his antibiotics on Friday afternoon mentioned that there was a 20 percent chance that it would not work and that we may end up back there on Monday for a new prescription. He seemed to get getting better; however, Monday was a particularly bad day for him. After about 2 hours of mostly crying I made another appointment for him to get his ear checked. I was shocked to hear that not only had the ear infection cleared up and now that the ear was clear, they could see that the tubes were still in.
Although they were in, they didn’t look quite right, and the ped recommended that we see our ENT within the next month or two. Of course I immediately called the ENT who typically has a month long wait, and they wanted to see him immediately. Now, this is the 4th doctor who had seen him in the past 10 days, and his verdict was: the tubes look great, they’re functioning, little guy has an inner ear and an outer ear (swimmers ear) infection.
Moral of the story? Get a first, second, third, and fourth opinion. Oh - and get your own otoscope. I don’t suggest at all that you skip going to the pediatrician. Not at all. I wouldn’t even think about asking for a prescription over the phone. However, if you have a child with perpetual ear problems, having an otoscope at home can give you some peace of mind. I’ll let you know in about 6 months if it’s helped us at all. Of course now that his tubes are definitely in, we may not need it so much.
