OurFirstMarriage #95: Be Like Me

Tanel gets emotional. Getting fired is a good thing? Promoting someone out of a job. Poor parenting causing illness. Tom’s new weight loss plan. The Bob series of books are pretty cool. Heh - we hadn’t heard of our namesake company before.

I wish bobette would make me some of your recipes.

Hmmm there’s nothing stopping Bob making one of your dishes! He needs to get some practice in for when the new baby come!

Yeah, Bob, get on that. Then you can blame me when you both get fat off all that great food ;)

Why on Earth can you not get demoted at Tanel’s company? That is ridiculous. I just had a guy at work ASK for a demotion. really more of a lateral move, but a move back to a position he had earlier. This type of thing should be encouraged.

I have been in a similar, but not identical situation to the guy/gal that just got fired. I work for a small, but rapidly growing IT services firm. I haven’t been there since day one, but pretty close. You mentioned this person having multiple responsibilities and only doing a few of them well. That has been me for the past few years. The difference is that it wasn’t multiple responsibilities, it was really multiple jobs. We just couldn’t afford to hire more people. I have directly created three positions in my company by wearing multiple hats and finally my boss and I realize, “you’re really not doing any of these things well because you can’t focus” And once one position is big enough, I peel that off and hire someone. Unfortunately, I also seem to add a new role that didn’t exist before.

I know this is almost the opposite of what you were talking about, but my point is that you have to get the right people on the bus. And the notion of “up-or-out” which sounds like how Tanel’s company is operating is a managerial mindset that rapidly losing favor. Companies are starting to recognize the need for worker bees. Not everyone wants to be a manager, not everyone would be good at it. And some people are content to make a certain amount of money, and not feel a strong desire for constant salrary increases as a way of validating their worth.

What’s the deal with that pill? I haven’t heard about it and was about to say sign me up until you said 5 Gs per pill. That is nothing short of rediculous.

Wait until they diagnosis something as a disease for it to be covered by insurance. Then it will be a couple of dollars a pop. I understand they already have a test for it for athletes as it is viewed as a performance enhancer.

“Up and out” is definitely a problem. You’re fortunate, Pat, in that your boss realized that it is the number of roles you are trying to fill and not some sort of lack of effort on your part. I’ve seen far too many companies that refused to recognize that. Even if they did, they tended to still view the person as some sort of failure which pretty much stalled their career. Basically to continue moving up after such an incident they’d have to change jobs. Not exactly fair IMO.
