The main problem I think was the smell had percolated through to the rubber bottom - so no amount of scrubbing or treatment of the rug itself shifted it. In the end it, along with several carpet cleaning scrubs and bi-carb applications, it took about 10 days of airing in the garden before it was okay to put back in his bedroom.
PS we have a nearly-2-year-old boy, and baby number two is due in a few weeks.
PPS That Darth Vader costume really IS brilliant!
