Stuart Little – awesome little man!

This was the first novel I read aloud with my kids – when they were 4 and 6 yrs old. My 4-yr old son really loved it, and has already made me read it again to him. The chapters are very independent of one another, so it is very easy to read one or two chapters at a time. It was first published in the 1940s, but as far as classics go, it doesn’t strike me as particularly sexist or too traditional – Stuart is a very independent mouse!

It’s a great read aloud for younger kids because it’s all about plot/adventures.

We’re reading the Tale of Despereaux now – I’ll review that one next.

Cool! So it is good for 4 year olds. Any younger? What age should the average kid be and still “get” it?

Most of the educator discussions about reading aloud recommend reading short novels as early as kindergarten (5-6 yrs old). My edition of Stuart Little has color illustrations, and I think that helped my 4 year old stay more engaged than he is with novels that don’t have any pictures. But I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone younger than 4 years.
